Amorgion Village – Katapola

Amorgos, the most eastern island of the Cyclades, seems to protect the eastern Small Cyclades due to its oblong shape. It stands proudly at the centre of the Southern Aegean Sea acting as the crossroad where the North meets the South. It’s the “exit” from the islands of the eastern Aegean towards the coast of Asia Minor.

Amorgos, an island of rich cultural heritage and particular wild beauty, the island of the deep blue, can’t but create a daunting feeling to its visitor. When the ferry approaches the island, you can feel the atmosphere changing. Its mountain range and deep sea parting create steep coasts on the east, while at the same time on the west there is a sense of harmony, as the mountains smoothly end up into small peninsulas with sandy bays in between.

Amorgos is an island of contrasts. The sudden changes in scenery completely consume the visitor creating many pleasant but also very strong emotions. In Amorgos you will get a taste of the Greek hospitality. Its inhabitants have been tested for many years, as it has deliberately been declared as “the island of the infrequent line”. They have been deprived of communication and now (that the island is growing rapidly) the Amorgians generously give out unforgettable moments to whoever chooses to visit their island. The Amorgians are good people, proud and, despite the increase in tourism over the last few years they have remained pure and true to the manners and customs of their land.

The island with an intense Cycladic shade and an intact traditional character over the passage of time will blow your mind away. It’s the island where the old meets the new and together they go hand in hand harmoniously without the one affecting the other. It’s the island where the human factor intervenes, only so much so as to not violate the natural beauty of the island. Amorgos is the island of harmony, tranquility, relaxation and fun.

Villages - Ports

Katapola

Katapola is the main port of Amorgos. It consists of three villages: Xylokeratidi, Rachidi and Katapola where the main pier is located. The distance between the cape of Fanari until the Petalo tis Ammou is approximately one nautical mile (1852m.) and is the best natural harbor in the Cyclades, where, when there is a storm, any ships that are in the northeastern Aegean come to moor here.

Historians believe that the great cultural development of the island that started during the Bronze Age is attributed to this. A fact that can also be proved by the research of archaeologist-professor from the University of Ioannina,Lila Maragos, and also in old writings.

Chora

Chora is the capital of Amorgos, it is built on the Northeast side of Mount Prophet Elias among other smaller hills. Visitors are impressed by its elegance, its beauty and its unique architecture, the numerous churches, the Castle known as the “guard” of Chora since the old times and the beautiful windmills. The inhabitants of the island had chosen this location to build their village then because it could not be seen from the sea hence allowing them to hide, when pirates approached the island.

Aegiali

The port of Aigiali, which is located on the northern side of the island, is one of the two ports of the island. From a distance, you can see its four villages: Tholaria on the left, Lagkada in the centre, Potamos to the right and Ormos along the beach. Ormos is the coastal settlement of Aigiali and is the newest in the area as in the old ages villages were usually built far away from sea to keep safe from pirates.

Potamos is located south of Ormos and is the village with the best view in Aigiali. Lagkada, is four kilometres away from Ormos, roughly a five minute car ride. The fourth village of the area, Tholaria, is located in the northwestern side of Aigiali and is close to Vigla in Ancient Aigial. It is 3.5 km away from Ormos, roughly a four minute drive.

Kato Meria

The first village we come across during our tour is Kamari. Next is Vroutsi and further along is the village of Arkesini. Arkesini was one of the three most ancient cities of Amorgos. Continuing on our way we arrive at Kolofana and eventually we reach Agia Paraskevi. This area is considered sacred by all of the inhabitants of Amorgos and the small Cyclades. Every year in honour of Agia Paraskevi a big festival takes place where the well renowned dish called Patatato is offered (nearly 2000 people attend to honour her).
